But later, when her brother went missing, her land was seized, and Ni Su fell into ruin, at her most desperate and vulnerable, the only one by her side was the ghost of Xu Hexue.

He accompanied her as she gritted her teeth and rose from the mud, straightened her back, searched for her brother, and sought justice.

He accompanied her through rain and snow, winter and spring.

When Ni Su’s wishes were fulfilled and the day came for her to part ways with Xu Hexue, she was dressed in a wedding gown, about to marry a suitor of good family, appearance, and demeanor.

However, that night, the ghost of Xu Hexue sat in the frost-covered shade of a tree and saw the girl in red, her arms full of incense candles, running towards him without fear of the wind and snow.

“Not getting married after all?”

“I am.”

Xu Hexue clenched his jaw and turned his head, unwilling to speak to her further.

Yet, the girl beneath the tree looked up at him, her temples covered in melting snow. “Xu Hexue, I have many incense candles. I can sustain you for a long time. I’m not afraid of the difference between humans and ghosts. Can we just stay like this, forever?”
