In a distant future, long after the world’s demise, deep within District 13, Adeline rereads the obituary in the newspaper.

Her husband was gone. Lost to the “things” that lurked outside, during a routine trap check. The recovery team had found only a severed left arm, a grim testament to his fate.

“I’ll never leave you, not unless you leave me first.”

But Damian couldn’t be dead. That was something only those who didn’t know him would say. He would never leave her.
